WASHINGTON (CNN) — U.S. President George W. Bush, saying "our entire economy is in danger," urged Congress to approve his administration’s $700 billion bailout proposal.

Failure to act quickly on the bailout plan could result in a “long and painful recession,” Bush warned.

"We’re in the midst of a serious financial crisis, and the federal government is responding with decisive actions," Bush said in a televised address Wednesday night from the White House.

Bush pointed out that the collapse of several major lenders was rooted in the subprime mortgage market that thrived over the past decade.

He said passage of the $700 billion bailout proposal was needed to restore confidence in the market.

"I’m a strong believer in free enterprise, so my natural instinct is to oppose government intervention," he said. But "these are not normal circumstances. The market is not functioning properly. There has been a widespread loss of confidence.

"Without immediate action by Congress, America can slip into a major panic."

"The plan is big enough to solve a serious problem," Bush said.

The plan calls for the government to buy from firms up to $700 billion in troubled assets — mainly mortgage-backed securities — whose values declined as the housing market imploded. The goal is to stabilize the companies and prompt them to lend again. iReport.com: How would you spend $700B?

"The government is the only institution patient enough to buy these assets at their current low prices and hold them until their prices return to normal," he said.

Federal Reserve chief Ben Bernanke warned Wednesday that the Wall Street crisis is the worst the nation has faced since the end of World War II and urged Congress to take action on a proposed bailout package.

Congress is considering whether to allow Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson to use federal funds to buy up to $700 billion in mortgage-related securities and other assets that have caused turbulence on Wall Street and have undermined credit markets worldwide.

But Paulson and Bernanke faced deeply skeptical lawmakers, including members of Bush’s own party, when they pitched the plan before congressional committees Tuesday and Wednesday.

The jet was headed to Van Nuys, California .Travis and Adam were taken to a burn center in Augusta, Ga., where they were both listed in critical condition.

Travis has had on-and-off relationship with Shanna Moakler for years, which was documented on MTV’s Meet the Barkers, and they have two children together. Adam was once engaged to Nicole Richie.

UPDATE: The four who were killed in the crash have been identified. They are: pilot Sarah Lemmon, 31, of Anaheim Hills, Calif.; co-pilot James Bland, 52, of Carlsbad, Calif.; security guard Charles Still, 25, of Los Angeles; and Barker’s assistant Chris Baker, 26, also of Los Angeles.

Baseball Bicycle; D’Backs Drew and M’s Beltre Each Hit For The Cycle

Four score and eight years ago players from the New York Giants and the Detroit Tigers performed a feat that could not be duplicated until two expansion teams did, well yesterday.

Bobby Veach of the Detroit Tigers and George Burns of the New York Giants, no not that George Burns, hit for the cycle on the same day.

Not an easy feat, nabbing a single, double, triple, and home run in one baseball game. It happens, maybe twice a year.

But on September 17th, 1920, Veach and Burns did it on the same day.

It would take almost 88 years of Major League Baseball history before that feat would be repeated.

But on September 1st, 2008, Stephen Drew (Arizona Diamondbacks) and Adrian Beltre (Seattle Mariners) combined to perform the same feat.

Drew and the D’Backs hosting the St. Louis Cardinals, singled in the leadoff spot against starter Joel Pinerio.

In the third he tripled off Pinerio and later scored. Already having the easiest and hardest hits to get a cycle, Drew bombed a solo home run in the fifth. He needed only the double for the cycle.

In the seventh inning, Drew hit a ground-rule double to complete the cycle, later in his final at-bat in the eighth he hit another double.

One time zone away the Seattle Mariners were playing in hitter friendly Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.

M’s third baseman Beltre started his night off with a solo home run in the second off of Rangers’ starter Matt Harrison.

In the fourth inning, Beltre added a RBI single.

In the sixth inning he singled again, but in the seventh Beltre doubled to deep left field, leaving himself the hardest hit needed to complete the cycle, the triple.

But in the eighth inning, off of Rangers meatball pitcher Josh Rupe, Beltre smacked a line drive to right-center field, the deepest part of the ballpark. Not even the throw coming in from Josh Hamilton would deny Beltre his cycle as he slid safely into third.

The most impressive part of Beltre’s cycle was that his triple in the 8th, was his first triple of the season…good timing.

Stephen Drew, ARZ - 5-for-5, HR (16), 3B (10), 2 2Bs (36), 3 runs, 1 RBI

Adrian Beltre, SEA - 5-for-6, HR (24), 3B (1), 2B (28), 5 runs, 3 RBI

Congrats Mr. Drew and Mr. Beltre on two magical nights, that only occur every 88 years.
